Beginner’s Mind: Teaching New Students Effectively

 Teaching beginner students can be a challenging and overwhelming experience.

Whether you’re teaching an ongoing introduction to yoga course, basic asana classes, or learning to manage new students in a general class with more confidence, this module is for you.

In this training you will be given invaluable insights into how a class for the beginner student differs from other classes. You will learn techniques and sequences that help the beginning student practice comfortably and safely while piquing their interest in the practice of yoga.

Please note: For these modules there is a 10-person maximum and 5-person minimum. You must register one week prior to the start of the program or have a deposit down of $100 to reserve your space. If the course is canceled due to low attendance, you will be notified 7 days prior to the start date and will receive a full refund.

Prerequisite: Must have 200-hour accreditation through an established yoga studio These modules must be taken together and in sequential order.

Schedule

Friday 6pm-9pm: Physical Practice and Theory
Saturday 1pm-5pm: Theory and Practical Application


Module 1: Perceiving the Beginner’s Mind

Practice asana, pranayama, and meditation with emphasis on simplified design of a class. Learn effective preparatory poses and appropriate compensation poses for building toward and winding down from postures. Demystify the practice of pranayama and introduce meditation techniques that easily engage new practitioners.

Module 1 Topics will include: 

• Assessing the student

• Class planning

• Simplifying prostrations

• Establishing positive patterns

• Refining verbal cues


Module 2: Meeting the Needs of New Students

Topics will include: 

• Cultivating keen perspective on basic postures

• Beginners in a multi-level class

• Adjusting and Assisting

• Challenging the beginner student

• Implementing pranayama, concentration, and meditation

• Use of props and assists


Additional hours will include

• Discussion/Q&A
