Meet Laurey Anicka: Teaching from the Inside Out
f you’ve ever taken a class with Laurey, you’ve likely felt her calming presence, her grounding energy—and maybe even caught a glimpse of her mischievous side. In her Strength & Mobility class, she creates space for students to breathe, reconnect, and simply be.
We caught up with Laurey to learn more about what fuels her teaching and what keeps her grounded.
Q: What first brought you to yoga—and what made you stay?
I first came to yoga out of curiosity and interest. Life was busy, and I needed something to help me slow down and reconnect. To be honest, I was pretty intimidated at first and worried I might feel out of place. From the moment I walked into my first in-person class, I was surprised at how welcoming and inclusive it was. There was no pressure to be perfect. I just needed to show up. That’s what made me stay.
Q: What inspired you to become a yoga teacher?
What inspired me was how much the practice helped me let go of stress and find space for myself without pressure or expectations. Life can feel overwhelming at times, and yoga became this calm, grounding place where I could breathe, reconnect, and feel like myself again. I wanted to help others find that same sense of peace, presence, and connection.
Q: What do you hope students take away from your classes, beyond the physical practice?
Yoga is so much more than movement—it’s a way to tune in, slow down, and reconnect with what really matters. I want my students to feel like they’ve been given permission to pause, breathe, and just be. If they walk away feeling a little more centered, a little more grounded, and a little more kind to themselves, then that means everything to me.
Q: What’s your favorite way to reset or ground yourself when you’re having a tough day?
I reset by turning to my breath—slow, steady, and intentional. It helps me quiet the noise of the day and come back to myself.
Q: Is there a pose or practice you resisted at first that you’ve come to love?
Of all the poses and practices, meditation was the most challenging for me at first. I had to learn to start small, build gradually, and focus on the process not perfection. Our minds tend to rush, and even a small break from our thoughts, perceptions, and sensations can create a peaceful space.
Q: What’s something that’s inspired you lately?
I’ve been revisiting an old favorite, Don’t Panic by Coldplay. I hadn’t listened to it in a while, but it hit differently this time. There’s something so simple and reassuring about the lyrics—“We live in a beautiful world”—that really resonated with me. It reminded me that even in chaos or heaviness, there’s still beauty and light.
Q: What’s one thing students might be surprised to learn about you?
While I might seem calm and collected while teaching yoga and leading meditation, you might be surprised to learn that I greatly appreciate a sense of humor—and I’m a mischievous smart aleck once you get to know me. 😊
