Walk This Way: Why Yoga + Walking Might Be the Perfect Pair
A few years ago, during a long road trip, I rediscovered the joy of audiobooks. I’d known about them, of course—but somewhere between gas stations and highways, I remembered something important about myself: I understand things better when I listen.
It’s probably why I rarely take notes during lectures or trainings. I’d rather listen closely than write something down and miss the essence.
That realization has been echoing as I make space for more intentional movement—specifically, more walking.
The Book That Got Me Moving (More)
Recently, I listened to Built to Move, an audiobook by physical therapists Kelly and Juliet Starrett. The book reinforced a lot of what I already knew and introduced me to a few new practices too—but one takeaway stuck with me:
👉 We need to walk more. A lot more. Even if you’re already a “walker.”
It’s easy to dismiss walking as something simple or “basic”—but the research is compelling. Walking isn’t just good for your physical health; it’s a major player in supporting mental well-being, mobility, digestion, and nervous system regulation.
A Walk to Remember (and Repeat)
Before Tejas moved into the Board of Trade building, my walk to the studio was just five to ten minutes—a pleasant pause between responsibilities.
Once we moved into the CBOT, that walk stretched into 30 minutes. At first, I adapted by taking the bus or hopping on a Divvy bike.
But after listening to Built to Move, I decided to lean into the longer walk. I now try to walk the 30-minute stretch at least once a day.
And the truth is—I love it.
My Favorite Combo for Feeling Good
I’m becoming more and more convinced that yoga + walking is the perfect combination for my personal well-being. The walk clears my head and prepares me for deeper awareness on the mat.
Even multiple short walks throughout the day (a few 10-minute strolls) can have a cumulative effect—especially when paired with intentional breath and mindful movement.
Now that the weather is turning, maybe you’re feeling it too—that urge to move a little more, to get outside, to reconnect with your body in a simple but nourishing way.
Take a Walk Toward Better Health
What if today’s walk wasn’t just about getting somewhere—but about getting back to your optimum health?
Take a stroll through the city, pause, breathe, and then wander over to 141 W Jackson for a class at Tejas. You don’t have to choose between effort and ease. Let both live in your practice.
🌿 Step into the studio and discover how yoga and walking can work together to support your best health—inside and out.
