How Much Yoga is Enough?
Are you wondering how often you should practice yoga to feel its full benefits? Whether you're looking to improve hip mobility, relieve back pain, reduce stress, or build strength and flexibility, the answer varies based on your personal goals.
My Journey with Yoga
My first yoga class was in 1996. I had low back pain, and a friend studying physical therapy tested my movement and suggested I work on my hip flexibility.
At the time, I lived near a martial arts center that offered an introductory yoga class on Saturday mornings. After that first class, I felt amazing—so much so that I committed to going every Saturday for a month. But when the course ended, I stopped.
For the next few years, I bounced around different yoga studios, exploring various yoga styles and instructors. I always enjoyed the way I felt after class, but I hadn’t yet found the right teacher or built a consistent habit.
The Power of Consistency
In 2000, I moved near Moksha Yoga Center in River West and found teachers I truly connected with—especially Paul Weitz. His mindful and challenging approach kept me engaged, and I began to prioritize my yoga practice.
Once a week helped me feel better.
Twice a week improved my flexibility and strength.
Three times a week created a real, lasting transformation.
Once I committed to three yoga classes per week, something shifted. Poses that once felt challenging became easier, and the benefits lasted far beyond the time spent on the mat.
By 2002, I was practicing daily and teaching others, deepening my understanding of how regular yoga practice enhances physical health, mental clarity, and emotional balance.
How Often Should You Practice Yoga?
If you're new to yoga and wondering how often to attend class, here's my advice:
Once a week is great for feeling good and easing into the practice.
Twice a week helps maintain flexibility, strength, and mindfulness.
Three times a week is when you’ll start to see significant progress.
