How, When, Where, and Why We Eat: A Mindful Approach
When discussing nutrition, the first thing we might think of is what to eat.
In Ayurveda, what we eat is important, but how, when, where, and why we eat are just as essential in finding balance and achieving the results we desire.
By becoming more mindful of these factors, we can develop a healthier relationship with food—one that supports digestion, energy, and overall well-being.
Eating as a Practice
Just like yoga, mindful eating is a practice—one of assessing, learning, and applying. Even with awareness, I still catch myself slipping into poor eating habits.
Choo-choo-choo-choo, Choo-choo-choo-choo
We’ve all heard that we should chew each bite 32-40 times. Of course, watermelon and steak require different amounts of mastication, but how often do we actually take the time to chew our food completely before swallowing?
Squirrel!
How often are we distracted while eating? Whether it's watching TV, reading a book, or swallowing a glob of cheese because it’s our turn to talk, distractions keep us from being present with our meals.
Hangry Much?
Skipping meals unconsciously can throw off our appetite regulation and lead to overeating later. The flip side? Mindless snacking between meals can overload the digestive system when the appetite isn’t even fully sparked.
Eating on a Train. And in a Car. And in a Tree.
Do you find yourself standing at the kitchen island while eating? Grabbing food on the way to work and eating in the car? Or slouched on the couch, binge-watching The Golden Girls for the 12th time? (Ok, maybe that’s just me.)
Food for Thought
Food is more than fuel—it carries symbolism and emotion. It can comfort us, bring joy, act as a reward, or even serve as punishment. But unconscious eating habits can keep us from making choices that truly nourish our bodies and allow for optimal digestion.
By observing how, when, where, and why we eat, we can begin to recognize patterns that might be disrupting digestion, assimilation, and elimination.
A Simple Exercise
Try this: Choose one to three meals per week to observe and assess your eating habits. Take note of how you feel before, during, and after. What changes can you make to improve digestion and overall well-being?
